Kemper System membranes fully adhere to the substrate and are permanently resilient, even under extreme climatic conditions. They are resistant to ice and standing water while offering a proven long-term solution of plaza waterproofing. Kemper System offers plaza deck and below grade waterproofing systems with single-source warranties available. Kemperol waterproofing membranes are compatible with:
Benefits
• | Odor-free or “same day” application available to meet environmental conditions and construction schedule |
• | Monolithic, seamless membrane that fully adheres to the surface |
• | Withstands heavy overburden, suitable for assemblies carrying pedestrian and vehicular traffic |
• | Single-source warranty on the full plaza assembly |
Challenge
Replace 80,000 sq.ft. of existing plaza waterproofing. Waterproof wearing surface was required to accommodate difficult construction scheduling restrictions, including modification of various design elements.
Solution
Installation of a complete edge-edge application of Kemperol membrane provided full watertightness during construction, facilitating the modification of planters and fountains as part of the plaza restoration. The same Kemperol membrane was used to flash and waterproof all design elements, eliminating the need to use dissimilar materials.
Challenge
Required a product that could adapt to a difficult transition between the new roof and IRMA/plaza deck area. The product needed to bond seamlessly with an adjoining rooftop terrace configuration while preventing damage from excessive leaks into the condominium units below.
Solution
Applied Kemperol BR membrane to concrete deck with mudset pavers, effortlessly encapsulating entire project area including multiple penetrations and meeting the strict Miami-Dade County hurricane, tropical storm and wind resistance standards necessary for the Miami Beach-located condominium complex.
Challenge
Project needed to be phased over three years, while accommodating difficult
scheduling logistics without interruption of warranty service. The 90,000
square-foot project was complicated by extensive green and overburden assemblies.
Solution
Complete edge-to-edge application of Kemperol membrane, both vertical and horizontal. The full adhesion of the membrane to the existing structure allowed the plaza to maintain absolute water tightness. The durability of the product allowed the contractor to install all other assemblies
without breaching membrane integrity.
Challenge
The management company for both properties required a highly durable, odorless system designed to exceed standard 20-year limitations, to protect vast high profile tenant space and high-traffic designer overburden assemblies. Design elements of exposed planters, fountain surfaces and other architectural features had to be integrated without the use of dissimilar materials to transition intricate detailing.
Solution
Installed one layer of odorless, solvent-free, UV-stable, high performance, low-VOC Kemperol 2K-PUR membrane over existing surface, which received asphalt setting bed and paver assembly.
Challenge
In 2004, the Board of Trustees at the University of Massachusetts were so concerned to have the job done right the first time that they required a 30-year warranty to waterproof the Du Bois Library’s 65,000-square-foot green roof/plaza. The trustees’ chief concern was protecting highly sensitive and valuable archival materials such as antique books, scrolls, papers and documents located directly below the plaza. Any water leakage or moisture seeping into the interior of the library would irrevocably destroy the priceless historic treasures.
Solution
The trustees chose the Kemperol BR membrane, a high performance seamless and self-terminating cold-fluid-applied reinforced unsaturated polyester system. Kemperol BR membranes can be surfaced with polyurethane coating, light-reflective sand aggregate surfacing or other granular materials to match the appearance of the surrounding substrate.

Challenge
The lower level of the building complex has a central vehicular service drive which provides access to the private residential two-car garages. Over the years, water infiltration into the garage led to the deterioration of the structural steel column/girder system. When the original waterproofing system started to fail, a first attempt to stop the leaks was undertaken by applying another membrane over the concrete wearing course. This repair entrapped moisture and further damaged the structure.
Solution
The contractor removed all residues from the substrate and applied solvent-free epoxy Kempertec primer to prepare and seal the surface. Silica sand was broadcast into the wet primer to achieve not only a chemical but also a mechanical bond between primer and waterproofing membrane. The following day, the details and vertical flashings were done before the odor-free waterproofing system Kemperol 2K-PUR was applied edge to edge over the primed surface. The apartments were occupied during the installation of the waterproofing system. Pavers were installed in decorative patterns to meet aesthetic requirements and to make the “plaza” a place to live.
